beautiful in it's simple functionality,

giving shape to

what has none of it's own.

But what's really special

is not the kite,

but what the kite is attached to...

a child!
You see...

the beach is the world's biggest toy.
You can't break it,
it's mandatory that you go play in the dirt,
and then, when you're done, you don't mind taking a bath.

And, oh the laughter...

of a child at the beach...

there's no finer music in all of God's creation.

It's that time of year when the sun gets regular,
and settles in to an orange Summer basketball...
slam dunking in the evening warmth...
nothing but net.
It's the same every night.
So how do I make the usual...
unusual?
My friend Chris told me to write a poem instead.
I had several good starts but it came back to the same thing,
it was always inadequate compared to...

The Truth.
So,
here is the great poem that is the miracle of the sun.

93,000,000 miles away,
ninety three million,
not ninety four,
not ninety two,
but just exactly the right ninety three million
to enable life to flourish on the earth.
It is the impossibility of a controlled nuclear reaction,
it's exploding force kept at bay by the invisible arms
of gravity.
It emits particles that have no mass,
flung into the void...
traveling forever...
until such time as they run into something.
Like the leaves of trees and plants.
Now, these trees and plants...
have chlorophyll!
Chlorophyll reacts with those particles with no mass that have traveled all this distance and...
give off oxygen...
which all other life uses to stay alive.
So,
with that in mind,
look at the sunset here,
and tell me tonight's is the same as the one from yesterday,
and tell me...
this isn't an endless miracle.

Oh yeah,

and I like being barefoot!

A Miracle Beyond the Sunset at The 814

How do I describe

the joy of the sunset that night?

It was a miracle in and of itself.

The weather was cloudy and windy the day before,

cloudy and stormy the day after,

but this day The Lord smiled upon us,

as he gave two people His most special blessing.

This is a story of true love.

It's the story of Jennifer and James...

James my beloved brother,

and Jennifer, the daughter I never had.

They met here at The 814,

two people not looking

but finding

each other.

I watched them from rocky beginnings,

like magnets,

now attracting,

now repelling,

now circling,

unable to resist,

and yet unsure.

Then a yielding,

to the overwealming necessity

of their joy

in being together...

and so decided to marry...

on this day,

this sparkling day,
with the water clear and pure,
The Lord's hand created,
this backdrop for their love...

right out front...

Thank You Jesus!

They met at The 814,

fell in love at the 814,

got married at the 814

First, this isn't a picture from May 14th. It's from last night's sunset

but I had already labled everything for the 14th so I left it that way.

I always try to frame my scenes so that it gives the illusion

that they could be from any island in the South Pacific.

It's not always easy.

Here's an example.

The framing is what I wanted but the boy with the long stick was

in the shot in some form or another no matter how much I tried to keep him out.

Finally his little brother got the stick from him and ran off down the beach...

Here's another example of "stuff in the way."

The lamp is okay but the volleyball poles could be disposed of.

I'll have to sharpen my Photoshop skills.

At first I thought that I had missed the setting like I did last night...

busy on the computer and got out there just as the sky looked like it did tonight.

Then I realized that the sun's rays were coming down not up..

and then...

it popped!

Right out the bottom

of the clouds.

If you look close you can see outrigger canoes in the lower right.

They're on their way out not in!

Just enough room to be almost completely round.

Here's a great shot of a surfer about to head out...

and that water's still really cold.

The only thing is that he isn't getting ready to surf,

he's just gotten back in and for some reason kept throwing his board around.

Maybe he should blame the worker

and not the tools.

This is what the camera was doing just before it died.

It turns out that it was a factory defect and Sony repaired it for free.

Back in business now here is tonight's sunset.

Like a drop of molten lava

dripping out of the sky.

Here's another one. The long horizontal black line at the bottom of

the picture is the dredging pipe that comes every April to clear the mouth of the harbor.

Here is one that I took before my camera left me high and dry.

It was left on the memory stick.

It was a week ago yesterday that I found my neighbor Steve,

dead on the floor of his apartment.

He had nothing left to live for,

so The Lord took him home,

earlier than should have been the case.

This storm blew in and was really bending the palm trees and whipping up whitecaps.

Here, the seagulls are heading in the direction that they couldn't go all day because of the wind.

I sure didn't figure on there being a sunset tonight but voila!

SEAGULLS

If you look at the seagulls you will see that they are all flying

in opposite directions. They sort of swirl along like this all helter

skelter but all move in a common direction as a flock.

It's warmer now than it was in August.

Sure am glad that I'm not in Massechusetts right now.

This was one of those perfect nights that comes along every now and then. The evening colors after the sun had set, the steel gray of the ocean water. We're having a Santa Ana condition which is sort of the SoCal version of Indian Summer. The air is warm and Venus is bright in the evening sky...

And it's still barefoot weather...

This kind of night always makes me want to make love to a woman. Something stirs in my soul with the movement of the sweet night air...

I missed the sunset proper because I was visiting with my neighbor, James. We are like a big family here and we never lack for company...

This is from the 26th of last month. I was busy repairing my network connection and missed tonight's sunset.

I always like to give thanks to God for letting me have another day. Thanks in the morning, thanks at the sunset and thanks the last thing at night. Just look at the picture. How could I not!
